I play piano for nine years but to this date I’m terrible at memorizing music and only know one (short) piece by heart. Any nice methods or tips for memorizing long pieces of music like those concert pianists do? Maybe not that big, but about four pages of music from Mozart, Debussy, Mendelssohn, and Chopin, to name a few.
In the near future I plan on learning Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue.
It’s one of the great romantic images…a lone performer, faced with a piano on a bare stage, armed with nothing but memory…and it’s one of the most absurd things musicians put themselves through. But it’s not likely to change soon, so here are a few ideas:
Try memorizing it backward, from the last few measures then working your way forward. This has a couple bonuses – you really get good at the last thing the audience is going to hear from you, and makes it a little more bearable to practice since you are always pointed at the end, which is always fun.
Work slowly – really slowly, with absolute attention. Better to spend ten minutes well than an hour poorly. I personally don’t like to work hands alone since I’ll never be playing the piece that way, and it seems not the best use of my time, but I do know other pianists who use that method to good effect.
There is some science that suggests things do not enter our long-term memory until about 6 hours have passed, and that trying to learn something new before that time is much less efficient than taking a significant break between memorizing sessions. Set a reasonable goal, then let it percolate in your brain until evening, and add a little in that session.
A teacher also once suggested memorizing where on the page certain passages are; I can’t "see" the notes in my head, but I do get a spatial feel to the piece that helps out the purely motor memory of how a piece "feels" under my hands.
And as was mentioned, learn the harmony, the key, the form, etc. The better you understand the construction of a work, the more likely you are to remember the details. If there is time, I’d love to try copying out a work by hand. it’s just like taking notes in school – it makes you focus on the important points that much longer.
