I downloaded limewire recently because one of my friends told me it was a good way to get music. But i have been told that there are better free music downloading programs that are harder to get caught using. which ones would those be? and they have to be free but won’t give me viruses. also, i noticed some of the songs off of limewire weren’t the best quality. is there one that will have the same quality as my other music?
Since everything you download goes through your provider’s servers, there’s no program that makes it harder for you to be caught. Once your provider starts "torrent-monitoring", you get caught.
Viruses? That depends on the person who created the torrent. If s/he had viruses on the computer, and the torrent got infected, you download the virus. There’s nothing you can do about it, and there’s no way you can tell you downloaded a virus until your anti-virus program catches it or, if it doesn’t catch it, until the virus ruins your computer. (File size is no indicator. Some people make viruses, then pad them out to exactly the length of a popular download.)
Quality – again – depends on the person who made the torrent. Some people know what they’re doing, some don’t. No way to tell until you listen to the song.
Bottom line? Read http://www.digitaljournal.com/article/274415 then decide whether the HUGE penalty is worth even a small chance of having to pay it.
Any kind of Peer 2 Peer networking is just as dangerous as the next. Limewire is simply watched more extensively because it is popular. You can get viruses from any one of them. You simply cannot just go downloading any random file you see. Here’s a hint though, If you see a file that a ridiculously large (i.e. 3 min song that is 20 Mb in size), it is probably a virus. Rule of thumb, only download files that have been downloaded by a lot of people, and be sure that the song is only about 1Mb per minute of the length of the song (3-4 Mb for a 3 min song is probably safe).
