I’m currently using frostwire but there is a lot of music that isn’t there and I’m scared I’m going to get a virus. What is the best way to download music for free?

You are pretty much talking about pirating, so you will ALWAYS have a risk of grabbing something buggy. However you can play it smart, all you need is a decent anti-virus like Norton and the like.
For instance, I use Limewire for individual downloads, see what the average file size for that song is and download the one with the most P2P connections. Larger file sizes might mean something being attached to them, or a recording at a live concert, which is always crap.
Use UTorrent for larger collections (for instance, I just downloaded pretty much everything made by Daft Punk) of an artist. I suggest good old http://www.thepiratebay.org for a few torrents. If you do not know how to torrent, check out multiple articles or site online.
Remember, a smart pirate’s computer lives a long life. Scan often.
