How did people listen to music in the past?

eg. What were some of the ways people could listen to music, in say, the classical era?

Basically, what were the only ways people could hear music prior to the invention of recording technology?

If someone who lived in the classical era wanted to listen to beethovens music, where would he have to go?

You either have to go to a show where it would be played live, or learn how to play a instrument yourself and play the song.

Thank goodness for technology today right!

The first method for recording sound was the phonograph, invented in 1877 and the first musical recording was made in 1888. Before that, you would have to go to a live concert.
