How can I play piano by ear by listening to music on the radio?

I can play by ear by listening to piano music, but it’s difficult for me to play by ear if the song doesn’t have a piano in it. Like I can play Apologize by One Republic by ear because it has piano in it.
How can I play by ear listening to a song that doesn’t involve piano? For example a Britney Spears song? Can I find a teacher to help me play songs by ear or do I have to teach myself with practice? Would it be easier if I learned chords? Thank you.
1) Record the song (if needed)
2) get the hang of the main tune in it such that it will come out naturally when you play it
3) Improvise on your accompaniment
The more frequent you practice it this way the better it will sound and soon your playing will be standardized…thats when you can start notating what you play

you have to train and know the tune. like you could write it down then you could add harmony to the melody. then you could add the accompaniment to the melody. I dunno, that’s how i do it.

Some people just have this ability…my maternal grandfather could hear a song once then play it…he also never had any sort of music lesson….makes you sick, doesn’t it …

That is the way you proceed. If you play any instrument, your ear is able to comprehend music better if the same instrument is involved. As you practice more, you will start recognizing other instruments as well.

It’s all the same. Just try to find what key the song is in. After that see if you can hum out a melody and match it on the keys. Pick out the baseline and try to develop the chords from the melody and baseline. I hope that makes sense.
